The Origin of the Name “Panshan”
Author:
In ancient times, Panshan was known as Panlongshan, Sizhengshan, and Wuzhongshan. Panlongshan earned its name because its contours wind and coil in a serpentine fashion, with no fixed orientation yet evoking the form of a dragon. Sizhengshan derives its name from a solitary peak that rises abruptly, standing alone without peer; its honeycomb‑like, lotus‑petal‑shaped slopes are identical on all four sides. As for Wuzhongshan, during the Spring and Autumn period, Panshan lay within the territory of the State of Wuzhong, and the mountain took its name from the state. Regarding the origin of the name Panshan, one account is offered by the Yuan‑dynasty Daoist Ji Zhizhen, who claimed that in antiquity a scholar named Tian Pan came from the State of Qi to take up residence there. Another explanation, advanced by the Qing‑dynasty poet‑monk Zhipu, holds that at the end of the Eastern Han dynasty, the renowned local gentleman Tian Chou once lived in seclusion here, giving rise to the name “Tianpan Mountain,” meaning that Tian Chou had lingered and dwelt in this place. Later, the name was shortened to Panshan.
