Jingdong’s Premier Mountain: The Buddhist Sacred Site of the Five Great Mountains of Mount Wutai

Author:

During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, Buddhism in Panshan reached its zenith, establishing the region as one of the most important Buddhist sacred sites not only in eastern Beijing but throughout the country. As recorded in Cai Shiying’s “Inscription on the Reconstruction of Zhengfa Chan Monastery” from the Qing era: “The ancient ‘Zhongpan’ is the Wutai of the East of the Capital.” From this, Panshan came to be known as the “Eastern Wutai Mountain.” When Zhao Puchu, former president of the Buddhist Association of China, visited Panshan, he inscribed the four large characters “Eastern Wutai Mountain,” which were carved into the cliff face of Cuiping Peak—thus firmly affirming Panshan’s pivotal role and standing in the development of Buddhism.

Panshan Scenic Area boasts a long and illustrious history, with numerous cultural relics and historic sites, including temples and pagodas. Known as the “Five Sacred Mountains of the East,” it is a renowned Buddhist sanctuary rich in cultural heritage. The most celebrated landmark at Panshan is Tiancheng Temple, situated on the lower terrace of the famed “Three Terraces.” There, the Qing emperor Qianlong’s personal monk, Master Yunhai, once devoted himself to spiritual practice. Within the temple grounds lie Feibao Gorge, a murmuring spring, imperial steles, and a majestic pagoda, alongside an ancient cypress tree—its gnarled branches stretching outward like the canopy of an umbrella—and a venerable ginkgo. The temple’s grand halls, such as the Great Hero Hall, the Hall of the Three Saints, the Jiangshan Panorama Pavilion, and the Wolun Tower, are both imposing and dignified, yet simple and unadorned. They exude a profound Buddhist aura while also evoking the refined atmosphere of an imperial palace and the elegant charm of a classical garden, leaving visitors spellbound and reluctant to depart.
