Heaven and Earth · Panshan, Act II: The Green Lamp

Amidst the snow and wind, Emperor Qianlong welcomed his bride, leading a grand imperial wedding procession; snowflakes swirled in the air, red and white intermingling. He formally proclaimed his empress, hosted a lavish banquet for all his ministers, and celebrated with music and dance in peace and prosperity. Yet, consumed by resentment toward his own mother, Qianlong deliberately kept Lady Niohuru at a distance, instructing her never again to reveal her humble origins lest it tarnish his reputation, and thus consigned her to seclusion within the palace walls. In the mountains, at the temple, Pan’er journeyed alone toward the lofty heights; there, amid the changing seasons of Mount Pan, a longing and a love destined never to meet slowly ripened, giving rise to each of their profound reflections on what it means to love the world.

Heaven and Earth · Panshan – Epilogue: Love · Mountain

In his twilight years, the aged Qianlong, even as he basked in the adulation of countless subjects, could not forget that poem from his youth—when he first beheld Panshan. Driven by a lingering sense of loss, he ordered his people to tirelessly restore and maintain the mountain’s temples. In his old age, Pan’er trudged, halting yet resolute, along the winding path that led to the summit, raising within his heart a temple of his own. All the past and all the lives yet to come, it seemed, were but the fleeting bloom of an ephemeral flower, patiently awaiting its moment. He asked the Buddha, he asked this mountain: though we may never meet, still, he felt no loneliness.

The main attractions of Panshan Mountain

Wufeng Bashi: The scenic beauty of Panshan is renowned for its “Five Peaks and Eight Rocks” and the “Three Terraces’ Splendor,” which together create an exceptionally unique landscape. The main peak, Guayue Peak, rises to an elevation of 864.4 meters; it is embraced by Zigai Peak in front, backed by Zilai Peak, connected to Jiuhua Peak on the east, and flanked by Wujian Peak on the west, with these five peaks clustered closely and their jagged rocks standing in striking profusion. The Three Terraces’ Splendor: Nature has naturally fashioned the “Three Terraces’ Splendor”—the upper terrace excels in pines, whose gnarled trunks twist skyward; the middle terrace shines with peculiar, wondrous rock formations; and the lower terrace captivates with cascading waters that sparkle like jade and spurt pearls. The Evening Rain over the Three Terraces: The Evening Rain over the Three Terraces is one of the Ten Scenic Spots of Tianjin. At dusk, when the lingering haze and mist veil the hills, all three terraces—the upper terrace famed for its pines, the middle terrace celebrated for its rocks, and the lower terrace admired for its water—are shrouded in clouds.
