South Heaven Gate

Author:

The Nantian Gate of Panshan is situated to the west of Miled Peak, to the north of Zigai Peak, and to the south of Guayue Peak. Its main attractions include the Chaotian Archway, the Dengtian Ladder, and the Nantian Gate Pavilion. The Dengtian Ladder begins at the foot of Miled Peak and stretches between Riyan Rock and Yueyan Rock, with a sloping length of 380 meters, a horizontal projection of 324 meters, a width of 3 meters, and a relative elevation gain of 150 meters. At its base stands a jade‑carved archway called the Chaotian Archway, measuring 7 meters wide and 7.6 meters high, crowned with an exquisitely carved kylin whose lifelike details are rendered with masterful precision. At the summit rises the Nantian Gate Pavilion, a structure that ingeniously blends elements of northern Chinese architectural styles. With its delicate, openwork design, double‑eaved hip‑and‑gable roof, yellow glazed‑tile roofing, and spiraling, richly gilded painted decorations, it bears plaques and couplets inscribed by the Qianlong Emperor of the Qing dynasty and by renowned contemporary calligraphers. The front plaques, “Nantian Gate” and “Thousand‑fold Purple Brocade,” aptly capture both the grandeur of the landscape—where thunderous cliffs loom over mountain slopes and sun and moon seem suspended among the trees—and the pavilion’s very name. Passing through this hall, visitors can take in the sublime vistas of Yunzhao Temple, Guayue Peak, and the Dingguang Buddha Relic Pagoda, evoking the unique sensation of ascending to great heights, gazing out over perilous precipices, and feeling one’s heart expand in harmony with the boundless cosmos.
