Woyun Tower, built against the mountainside and by the water, stands two stories tall with three bays. Its high ridge and soaring eaves, together with its intricately carved beams and painted rafters, lend it a dignified grandeur. The tower was rebuilt in 1984. On summer days, after a rain has cleared and the sun breaks through, one often sees a streak of rosy clouds; gently swayed by the breeze, they either veil the tower or pass right through it, creating a most intriguing spectacle—hence the name.
Opposite the Wolun Tower stands an ancient opera stage, restored and rebuilt in 2005. The inscription “Yunlou Lǐyǐng” was penned by Emperor Qianlong. “Yunlou” refers to the Wolun Tower, “Lǐ” denotes the historic stage, and “Yǐng” evokes the lotus pond; together, the stage, the pond, and the tower complement one another, creating the celebrated “Yunlou Lǐyǐng” vista. When one thinks of the “Li Garden,” most people immediately associate it with Chinese opera—so named because the theatrical world was once known as the “Li Garden.” “Yunlou Lǐyǐng” vividly reenacts the scene of Emperor Qianlong’s imperial visit, when he came here to watch a performance.
