Pan Shan Ancient Middle Pan Temple Ruins and Stone Pagoda Grove

Author:

Heading north from Panshan Cemetery, passing the Northern Shaolin Temple—built during the Wei and Jin dynasties—and the Duobao Pagoda along Panshan Middle Road, then through “One-Line Sky,” you will reach the ruins of the ancient Zhongpan Temple and a grove of stone pagodas. This site is a key cultural relic protection unit in Jixian County.

The ancient Zhongpan Temple was first built during the Tang Dynasty and was renamed Zhengfa Chan Monastery in the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty. During the Anti-Japanese War, it served as one of the base areas for our Eighth Route Army in eastern Hebei. Within the temple grounds, remnants of a grenade‑manufacturing factory operated by our forces can still be found. In 1942, the Japanese army razed the site to the ground. To this day, the temple’s foundations remain, along with two stone steles.

The Stone Pagoda Grove, a cemetery of monk’s tombs, lies half a li from the ruins of the ancient Zhongpan Temple. More than twenty standing and toppled stone pagodas stand here, forming an exceptionally rare historical site. These memorial stupas are all carved from granite and typically constructed by stacking three massive stones; they are quite small in scale. The central body bears the names of the monks. The pagodas come in square, hexagonal, or “lama‑belly” shapes—some feature eaves, others do not; some are solid, others hollow. Varied and colorful, arranged at different heights, they present a truly remarkable spectacle.
