The Three Incense Paths of Shangpanshan Mountain
Author:
Panshan is a renowned scenic area, covering a total of 106 square kilometers. There are numerous trails crisscrossing the mountain, yet only three main incense‑bearing paths lead to the summit.
West Route: Starting from Chazian, the trail ascends through Lujiayu, Shuangfeng Temple, Fazang Temple, Taoyuan Cave, and Motian Stone, eventually reaching Yunzhao Temple at the main peak, Guayue Peak. East Route: Ascending from Guanzhuang, Yingfang, and Yushi Zhuang, the path passes Xiangjian, Yinmatan, Beishao Lin Temple, Dongzhu An, and other sites before arriving at Yunzhao Temple on Guayue Peak. Central Route: Departing from Changling Shifo Village, the trail winds past Lianhua Pool, Rusheng, Tiancheng Temple, Shen Niu Fen, Wansong Temple, Pengri Stone, Panggu Temple, Jinshi Fen, and more, ultimately leading to Yunzhao Temple atop Guayue Peak.
If you’re ascending the mountain via the East Road, it has now been developed into a passenger‑car road. Alternatively, if you’d like to head straight up the winding mountain road to enjoy the scenic views of Shangpan, you can take a shuttle bus operated by the Pan‑Shan Scenic Area’s passenger transport fleet, which will take you directly to the parking lot at Guayue Peak.
If you ascend from the central trail, a passenger ropeway stretching over a thousand meters has been added. Riding the ropeway offers unobstructed, panoramic views of the mountain’s ancient temples, lush forests, and striking pine trees and peculiar rock formations. Yet this also diminishes the joy of hiking and the sense of immersion that comes from personally experiencing the temples—a real pity. The ropeway terminates on the eastern side of Wansong Temple at the mid‑mountain level; from there, you can take Wansong Temple’s “Yun Song Ropeway” up to Guayue Peak. If you choose the western trail, you’ll follow a rustic mountain path that has retained its pristine character. Ascending along this winding path is a delight in itself. Since ancient times, every step on Pan Mountain has offered captivating scenery, each vista steeped in history and legend. To truly appreciate Pan Mountain’s many attractions, you’ll need at least a week—just enough time to catch the highlights. So whichever route you take, it’s best to stay overnight and immerse yourself fully in the beauty and charm of this enchanting place.
