Relevant information about the monumental work “Pan Shan Zhi”

Author:

In 1985, a nationwide effort to compile local gazetteers gained momentum, and Tianjin City likewise launched its own gazetteer‑compilation project, incorporating the preparation of the “Panshan Gazetteer” into its schedule. At the same time, the Jixian Local Gazetteer Office, building on its work on the “Jixian Gazetteer,” began collecting and organizing materials for the “Panshan Gazetteer.”

In 1994, after completing the compilation of the county gazetteer, the Jixian Local Records Office drafted the outline for the “Panshan Gazetteer.” Building on existing materials, it then traveled to the Beijing Library and the First National Archives to consult a series of relevant sources, including the Qianlong Emperor’s “Daily Records” and the “Complete Collection of Poems and Prose Composed by the Qing Emperor Gaozong.”

In 1997, following meticulous preparations by the County Local Records Office, the Jixian “Panshan Gazetteer” Compilation Committee was established, comprising leading county officials and heads of relevant departments. An editorial office was set up, and personnel were mobilized to concentrate efforts, officially launching the compilation process. By the end of 2001, the draft of the “Panshan Gazetteer” had been preliminarily completed.

In May 2002, the Municipal Local Records Office convened a review meeting at the Yuyang Hotel in Jixian County, bringing together experts and scholars to evaluate the draft of the “Panshan Gazetteer.” The meeting was attended by more than thirty participants, including representatives from the Office of the China Local Records Guidance Group, municipal local records officials, and distinguished scholars. Participants offered candid and constructive comments, conducting a thorough and responsible examination and appraisal of the draft. The reviews by leaders and experts not only fully acknowledged the work’s strengths and objectively identified its shortcomings but also earnestly put forward valuable suggestions for revision. Renowned local records scholar and former professor at Nankai University, Mr. Lai Xinxia, submitted a detailed written evaluation of the draft.

Following the review meeting, the drafting team, in light of the comments from experts and scholars, made substantial revisions to address issues such as imbalances in the relative emphasis of content and ensuring an appropriate level of detail, as well as shortcomings in stylistic refinement and adherence to standard writing conventions, thereby completing the draft of the chronicle for the second time.

To ensure the quality of the local gazetteer, in April 2004 the Municipal Local Gazetteer Office once again seconded key personnel and assembled a highly capable team to review and revise the draft. At the same time, the chronological scope of the manuscript was extended from 2002 to October 2005. Thus, after nearly a decade of preparation—beginning with planning in 1993, followed by actual compilation starting in 1997, and culminating in the 2004 review and revision by the Municipal Local Gazetteer Office—and under the leadership of several successive committees of the Jixian County CPC Committee and the Jixian County People’s Government, with the support, guidance, and assistance of the China Local Gazetteers Guidance Group and the Tianjin Municipal Local Gazetteer Office, and through the dedicated efforts of the Pan Shan Gazetteer Editorial Office of Jixian County and all the staff of the Municipal Local Gazetteer Office, the newly compiled Pan Shan Gazetteer has finally been made available to readers.
