A timely rain refreshes the fragrant morning, yet the lingering chill and sudden warmth are ever so real.

Frogs drum on the grassy pond, while villagers and elders fondly recall their toil in the fields.

With rice planting, every household rejoices in the water; nature, impartial and boundless, brings spring to all corners.

A pot of fragrant braised meat for mother—today, the daughter is returning to her in-laws’ home.

Today is the second of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms—Rain Water.

The “Collection of Explanations for the Seventy-two Solar Terms” describes the Rain Water solar term as follows: “In the first month of the year, Heaven generates water. Spring is associated with wood, yet anything that gives rise to wood must be water; therefore, after the Beginning of Spring comes Rain Water. Moreover, when the east wind has melted the ice, it disperses and turns into rain.”

The arrival of the Rain Water solar term signals an increase in rainfall, a gradual warming of the climate, the melting of ice and snow, and the awakening of all living things—spring is just around the corner.

In addition, the Rain Water solar term is closely linked to agricultural activities, marking the start of spring plowing and exerting a significant influence on both farming and daily life.

During the Rain Water solar term, folk traditions abound, including “pulling the guardian spirit,” “bumping to entrust one’s fate,” and “welcoming longevity.” These customs reflect people’s celebration of the vitality and renewal brought by the season, as well as their hopes for a bountiful harvest and family happiness in the days ahead.

As the winter chill has nearly faded, willows shrouded in mist and a gentle breeze carry auspicious air throughout the mountains and rivers.
