Today is Dahan: An Icefall Spectacle Too Stunning to Resist, No Matter How Cold It Gets

Author:

Da Han, the last of the twenty-four solar terms, marks the coldest period of the year.

As the ancients said, “The wondrous, magnificent, and extraordinary sights of the world are often found in places that are perilous and remote.” Such is the case with the spectacle of icefalls, which appear only in the bitter depths of winter.

Panshan is currently in its prime for viewing icefalls, drawing visitors from all over. Even in the depths of winter, they eagerly come to catch a glimpse of this spectacular icy spectacle.

Amid the kilometer‑long canyons, crystal‑clear ice flowers and snowy filaments cling to rocks, trees, shrubs, and even the towering cliff faces.

The once towering Shuxia Waterfall has transformed into an exuberantly grand, undulating ice cascade. Some have praised it thus: “A flying spring, imbued with jade, turns to a frosty cascade; myriad strands hang as lightly as willow filaments. Behold the lofty precipice, draped in crystalline splendor—how fitting that crimson clouds should share its radiant clarity.”

Turning our gaze to the ice and snow sculptures surrounding the icefall: “Trees and snow blend so closely they seem indistinguishable,” “A sheer cliff melts of its own accord, resembling a jade wall,” and “Gazing upward at the emerald screen veiled in clouds halfway up the slope, while looking down at the icy curtain—nature’s artistry laid bare.” Once celebrated for its secluded, otherworldly scenery across three seasons, Tiancheng Gorge has now transformed into an “Ice Valley” during winter.

In the “Ice Valley,” towering ice walls and sails rise to heights of 10 or even 20 meters, looking straight out of a fairy tale and lending an added layer of mystique to the already enchanting mountain‑winding landscape.

The once-rushing waterfall has fallen into slumber, and the traces of its surging waters tumbling down the cliff face are laid bare, crystal‑clear in the frozen embrace.

Ice‑bound and hanging upside down, cloaked in silver—those poetic lines evoking the northern landscape of a thousand miles frozen now come to life.

Using water as the material and wind as the tool, they have carved the fleeting moment of a waterfall, leaving one in awe of nature’s sheer artistry.

They rise, some tall and some low, some broad and some narrow, each with its own unique form. Standing bathed in the sunlight, they gleam with a crystalline radiance, as if countless stars had descended to earth.

Only when you stand before the icefall can you truly sense its serene yet solemn atmosphere. The sound of flowing water fades into stillness, broken only by the occasional song of a bird in the distance.

The grandeur of the icefall, set off by the simple beauty of the surrounding rocks and trees, creates a harmonious scene. At this moment, one feels as though merged with nature, their soul bathed in an unprecedented sense of peace.

Within the Panshan Scenic Area, there are numerous icefall attractions, each with its own unique charm—some resemble crystalline screens, while others look like frozen white ribbons drifting through the mountains.

The grandeur of an icefall defies even the most eloquent descriptions; only by standing before it can one truly grasp the awe and beauty it inspires.

Recently, coinciding with the inaugural Jing-Jin-Hebei Panshan Ice and Snow Culture Festival, the “Meet at Panshan Ice and Snow Culture Festival” online interactive topic raffle is in full swing.
