Together to Panshan, Together with Nature: Research-Based Learning and Hands-On Practice

Jointly Embarking on a Study-Practice Expedition to Panshan Mountain

Panshan is a national scenic spot and one of the first batch of national 5A‑level tourist attractions. It is located in Jizhou District, Tianjin, 60 kilometers east of Beijing and 100 kilometers north of Tianjin. In 1994, Panshan was designated a national scenic area, and in 2007 it was recognized as one of the inaugural national 5A‑level tourist sites. The park covers a planned area of 110.9 square kilometers and boasts one national key cultural relic protection site, six municipal-level cultural relic protection sites, and 425 ancient and famous trees—accounting for 59% of Tianjin’s total (720 trees). It is a rich natural classroom for studying flora!

Together we embrace nature, together we head to Panshan.

Red Education: Humility and Courage After Shame

During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Panshan served as a renowned anti-Japanese base area in eastern Hebei, giving rise to celebrated anti-Japanese commanders such as Bao Sen and heroic collectives like the Panshan Militia Squad. It is home to Tianjin’s only memorial park dedicated to the War of Resistance—the Panshan Martyrs’ Cemetery—which ranks among the nation’s 100 patriotic education bases and classic red tourism destinations, and has been included in the national “Red Tourism” program’s list of thirty premium routes.

Science Education Class on Plants and Animals

While exploring the valleys of Panshan Mountain, students can observe and identify a wide variety of animals, birds, plants, and traditional Chinese medicinal herbs found within the scenic area. Through all five senses, they experience the refreshing vitality of the forest’s negative oxygen ions, fostering a sense of compassion and responsibility toward nature and inspiring them to actively engage in the vibrant practice of transforming the value of “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets” into concrete actions for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

Geology and Mineral Resources Research-Based Learning Practice

Panshan is part of the Yanshan Mountains, yet its geological structure is markedly distinct. Within the Jixian National Geopark, Panshan has been designated as a granite landform scenic area.

In 1994, Panshan was designated a “National Key Scenic and Historic Area” by the State Council, and in 2001 it was included in the Jixian National Geopark by the Ministry of Land and Resources. Its distinctive geological formations, hydrological and mineral resources, climate and soil conditions, as well as its rich flora and fauna, lend Panshan an air of mystery and continue to draw numerous experts and scholars in geology, geography, ecological environment, and biology to conduct scientific research and field studies there.

Panshan Geology and Landforms

The Dianshan massif is predominantly composed of granitic rocks, which typically exhibit a flesh‑red, gray, or grayish‑white coloration. The rock mass is densely structured and highly competent, constituting an impermeable to low‑permeability aquitard. The intrusion extends approximately 12 km from north to south and 8 km from east to west, with an exposed area of 80 km². As a composite pluton formed by multiple episodes of magmatic emplacement, the Dianshan granitic body can be subdivided into four distinct phases based on lithology and contact relationships: the first phase consists of coarse‑grained granite, occurring along the margins; the second phase comprises medium‑grained biotite granite, located in the interior of the body; the third phase is porphyritic quartz monzonite, representing the main body of the Dianshan granites and widely exposed; and the fourth phase consists of fine‑grained monzonitic granite, occurring as irregular stocks and dikes at the periphery. The Dianshan granites display considerable structural diversity, characterized by a wide variety of plutonic forms, numerous dikes, abundant xenoliths, and a rich array of mineral resources.

From the ground According to the theory of quality, due to the flower Tectonic joints in granites and porphyritic quartz monzonites are quite well developed. nurture The influence of faulting is striking, and combined with “spheroidal weathering,” it has given Panshan a wealth of dramatic vertical cliffs, deep canyons, sheer rock faces, peculiar peaks, and oddly shaped boulders, with elevation differences ranging from 100 to 200 meters. The mountain’s main peak, Guayue Peak, stands at 864.4 meters above sea level. Though its altitude is modest compared with many of China’s major mountain ranges, its distinctive geology and landforms draw countless visitors who marvel that certain areas of Panshan truly possess the rugged grandeur of Mount Hua.

Panshan Hydrology and Mineral Resources

The Panshan region is primarily shaped by slope runoff and seasonal streams. Force In terms of hydrology, the surface watercourses in Panshan mainly include the Jiyun River, Zhou River, Ju River, and Lanquan River. Panshan’s groundwater recharge conditions are favorable: on the one hand, it is supplied by fracture water in the granite and pore water in the weathered layer at Jiuhua Peak; on the other hand, it benefits from strong groundwater runoff along the bedrock section of the Ju River between Gouhe Village and Beicun. Earth For example, the “Feibai Gully” on the west side of Tiancheng Temple is a typical seasonal surface stream, while the “Jianjian Spring” behind the temple is fissure water flowing beneath the rock strata.

Panshan is also exceptionally rich in mineral resources, which are primarily categorized into metallic and non-metallic ores. Among metallic minerals, typical examples include the Yongpingzhuang tungsten deposit and the “Jixian Mine”; among nonmetallic minerals, the Maimaishi deposit in Panshan is a product of the weathering of the third-stage porphyritic quartz monzonite within the Panshan granitic body. It is distributed across approximately 80% of the Panshan granite massif, constituting a major mineral resource advantage of the region. It boasts high yield and superior quality, with very low levels of radioactive substances and a rich content of trace elements essential to human health, making it a wholesome mineral medicinal stone.
