Heaven and Earth · Panshan: A Scene in the Mortal World
Empress Niohuru, the mother of Hongli, heeded the imperial astrologer’s divination: to safeguard her son’s throne, he must marry into a prestigious noble house, while the humble station of the commoner Pan’er would bring him ill fortune. When her attempts to force a match failed, she secretly journeyed to Mount Panshan and decreed that Pan’er should never again set eyes on Hongli, urging her instead to take the vows of a nun. Upon the passing of the Yongzheng Emperor, Hongli was hurriedly enthroned, missing their promised rendezvous—yet at last receiving his mother’s return, bearing with her the resolute decision of Pan’er to cut her hair and enter the monastic life… As Pan’er’s dreams shattered and her heart burned with despair, the mountains and waters seemed to echo the promise they had made in childhood.

Heaven and Earth · Panshan, Act II: The Green Lamp
Amidst the snow and wind, Emperor Qianlong welcomed his bride, leading a grand imperial wedding procession; snowflakes swirled in the air, red and white intermingling. He formally proclaimed his empress, hosted a lavish banquet for all his ministers, and celebrated with music and dance in peace and prosperity. Yet, consumed by resentment toward his own mother, Qianlong deliberately kept Lady Niohuru at a distance, instructing her never again to reveal her humble origins lest it tarnish his reputation, and thus consigned her to seclusion within the palace walls. In the mountains, at the temple, Pan’er journeyed alone toward the lofty heights; there, amid the changing seasons of Mount Pan, a longing and a love destined never to meet slowly ripened, giving rise to each of their profound reflections on what it means to love the world.
